Douglas A. Berthiaume Independent Director since 1988 Mr. Berthiaume is chairman, president and chief executive officer of Waters Corporation, a manufacturer of high performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, thermal analysis and rheology products and services. From 1990 to 1994, Mr. Berthiaume served as president of the Waters Chromatography Division of Millipore Corporation, the predecessor business of the company, which was purchased in 1994.

He is chairman of the Children’s Hospital (Boston) Trust Board and is a member of the Children’s Hospital board of trustees. He was recruited to the Genzyme board for his expertise and 18 years experience as CEO of a global supplier of biotechnology manufacturing and laboratory equipment. He also has considerable financial experience, having served for 12 years as the corporate controller, then chief financial officer of Millipore Corp. Previously, as a CPA, he had seven years of experience auditing public companies as an independent public accountant. Mr. Berthiaume earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
