2006 & Earlier

Biotechnology Heritage Award

In 2008, Henri Termeer was presented the 2008 Biotechnology Heritage Award by The Chemical Heritage Foundation (CHF) and the Biotechnology Industry Organization during BIO’s annual international convention, in San Diego. The Biotechnology Heritage Award is presented yearly at a special ceremony during the BIO Annual International Convention to honor individuals who have contributed significantly to the growth of biotechnology through discovery, innovation, commercialization, and/or public understanding.

Boston Business Journal Best Places to Work

In 2008, Genzyme was recognized by the Boston Business Journal as one of the “Best Places to Work” in Massachusetts. Genzyme was ranked 19th on the list of large companies, marking the 4th year that Genzyme has made the list since its inception in 2003. The results for Genzyme were based on survey responses from more than 950 company employees in Massachusetts. The survey asked questions related to work environment, work-life balance, job satisfaction and advancement opportunities, compensation and benefits.

The Scientist Best Places to Work

In 2008, Genzyme was just recognized by The Scientist Magazine as one of the “Best Places to Work” in the industry. The Scientist’s sixth annual survey assessed how scientists rate the quality of their experience in their place of employment. Out of more than 200 companies, Genzyme ranked 3rd in the large company category and 19th overall.

World’s Most Ethical Company

In 2008, for the second time, Genzyme was named one of the most ethical companies by Ethisphere magazine.

Best Employer Belgium

In 2008, for the third time, Genzyme’s Geel facility was listed among the top 10 “Best Places to Work” in Belgium, ranking seventh among companies with less than 500 employees. In addition, Genzyme also received the Special Award for Respect, recognizing our commitment to creating a collaborative and supportive work environment within which individuals can strive towards a positive work/life balance.

Exame magazine 250 Best Places to Work

In 2008, Genzyme was named one of the “250 Best Places to Work” in Portugal, ranking third among the top employers. Genzyme was also ranked first among the “best company to work for with less than 250 employees” and first in a category honoring the “company who better balances career with family.”

Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in World

In 2008, for the second consecutive year, Genzyme was named one of the "Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in World" by Innovest Strategic Value Advisors. The Global 100 is an annual list of companies that most effectively manage environmental, social and corporate governance risks and opportunities. The firms on the list are chosen from the more than 1,800 publicly traded companies on the MSCI World Index.

BusinessWeek Top Corporate Givers

In 2007, BusinessWeek ranked Genzyme a top in-kind giver in its corporate philanthropy survey. Genzyme was recognized for its programs that provide free medicines to patients in the developing world.

The journal Science and the American Association for the Advancement of Science Top Employer

In 2007, an independent survey commissioned by the journal Science ranked Genzyme fifth among nearly 500 companies citing it as one of the top life-science employers of scientists in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. In addition, Genzyme was the highest ranked company in New England. This was the fifth consecutive year Genzyme has been named a “Top Employer” on this reputable survey.

World’s Most Ethical Company

Genzyme was named one of 2007’s most ethical companies in the “Pharma and Biotech” category by Ethisphere magazine.

National Medal of Technology

In 2007, Genzyme was chosen to receive the National Medal of Technology, the highest honor awarded by the President of the United States for technological innovation. Genzyme was recognized "for pioneering dramatic improvements in the health of thousands of patients with rare diseases and harnessing the promise of biotechnology to develop innovative new therapies.”

Master Entrepreneur Award

In 2007, Ernst & Young presented President, Chairman and CEO of Genzyme Corp. Henri A. Termeer with the Master Entrepreneur Award for his significant contributions to the biotechnology industry. The Master Entrepreneur Award is presented periodically to individuals who have made a profound impact on their companies, industries, and communities.

James D. Watson Helix Award

Genzyme received the 2007 James D. Watson Helix Award, which recognizes companies that have distinguished themselves by setting a singular standard of leadership in scientific innovation and company growth.

FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For

In 2007, for the second consecutive year, Genzyme was named one of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" in the United States, ranking 43 among the top employers. To select the companies for their list, FORTUNE evaluates the opinions of the company's own employees and reviews the company’s policies and culture.

Dow Jones Sustainability World Indexes

In 2007, for the third consecutive year, Genzyme was recognized as a corporate sustainability leader among healthcare sector companies. Corporate Sustainability is a business approach that creates long-term shareholder value by embracing opportunities and managing risks related to economic, environmental and social developments.
