Partnering at Genzyme

Genzyme understands what it takes to develop and deliver treatments and diagnostics to patients. Our research pipeline and product portfolio are diverse and include protein, small-molecule, polymer, biomaterial, and gene and cell-based therapeutics.

Genzyme seeks strategic collaborations to expand our commercialized products and services; to supplement our product pipeline; and to access complementary research, technology and development capabilities. We seek to combine our strengths with those of others and to work collaboratively with partners to develop and commercialize therapeutic products and diagnostic services. To this end, we search globally for innovative product candidates at various development stages, with a clear goal to accelerate the delivery of novel and highly effective products and services to the global marketplace.

Partnering Strategy

Genzyme has a twenty-year history of creating mutually beneficial partnerships. These relationships span the globe and include: Mt. Sinai School of Medicine for Fabry disease treatment; BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. for the lysosomal storage disorder MPS I (Mucopolysaccharidosis I); Cambridge Antibody Technology for antibody therapies; and Kirin Brewing Co., Ltd. for antibody development.

Genzyme considers a variety of criteria when evaluating potential partnerships. First-rate science is an imperative in any collaboration. Another key factor is a focus on a well-defined patient population with an unmet or underserved medical need, where a new product or service may change the standard of care and provide a strong, positive impact on patients. In addition, we encourage early-stage science opportunities, new inventions, emerging technologies, and translational research to be brought to our attention. And while we continue to invest in internal development programs, our entrepreneurial culture and commitment to meeting the needs of patients drives us to explore business opportunities outside of our specific research and development efforts. We are prepared to enter new therapeutic markets and to make the clinical, manufacturing, and market investments it takes to bring products to market.

A Powerful Infrastructure for Partnering

Genzyme’s global experience and infrastructure are key strategic assets that bring tremendous value to our partners. We have resources that are fully integrated and work in collaboration with each other and our partners.

We have a proven track record of moving products from research through to commercialization. Our capabilities include world-class science, as well as experienced product development, medical, clinical and regulatory teams, marketing, sales and reimbursement expertise, and 14 state of the art manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and in Europe.
